Day 3 Reflections

Using the SST Experiential Learning Cycle, we went through the reflections with students.

SNNameWhat happened today? What is the cause of it?What have I learnt? What should I do in the future?
1Jayden In the morning we went through a lesson on the sun and did the Coronado observation, but failed because of cloudy skies.
In the afternoon, we watched documentaries on dangerous planets in space and the formation of the earth.
We then went fox hunting (again) to do a final test on the equipment
We failed to do the coronado observation due to cloudy skies.
None of the groups in fox hunting found any transmitters due to the transmitters being placed in hard to find locations where the signals would get disrupted.
I have learnt about the signals in fox hunting, and there would be a shielded effect if you put the transmitters near buildings as the signals could get reflected and would be harder to receivePut the transmitters in more open areas and check the weather for cloudy skies.
2ClydeWe had a lesson on the sun and solar flares in the morning, and we used the Coronado solar telescope to look at the sun. However, there was a limited view as the view was obstructed by clouds.

We then watched a screening of Planets from Hell, and I learnt about the the planets in the universe that were extremely uninhabitable. Then, after having our lunch, I watched "Birth Of The Earth", the documentary. I learnt about the formation of the earth, and the process that resulted in the earth that we live on today.
We could not use the coronado due to the sky being cloudy.

The foxhunting could have gone better if the signals were not reflected, and if the hidden locations were more open and directional.
I have learnt to plan ahead and make sure that the sky will not be cloudy.
3AlexIn the morning, we had a lesson about the sun. After that, we watched a documentry about exoplanets and how the earth formed. After that we conducted our last fox hunting programmes for the trip. None of the groups found the transmitters. No one could find the transmitters as they were hidden in hard to find places and at places where the signal cannnot be detected or is hard to detect. I have learnt to place the transmitters in wide open spaces away from buildings. I should plant the transmitters in the right spot so that in the future fox hunting games, the teams can actually find the trasmitters.
4KevinToday, we watched a documentary on the harsh climates of certain planets. We also watched a documentary on how planets are formed. We conducted a fox hunting session where I was the hunter, however, we did ot manage to find any transmitters. The walls and other obstacles such as metal objects made it difficult to locate the source of the signal. The signal was also inconsitent at times. I learnt that the signals will be reflected off walls, making it harder to locate the transmitter. Metal will also weaken the signal, making it more difficult to track down. I should place the transmitters in an open area with little obstacles around.
5KennethToday, we watched a documentary called Mysteries of the Universe. Specifically, episodes called "Planet from Hell" and "Birth of the Earth". The documentraries were extremely knowledgeable and was able to provide a lot of information for our young minds to absorb.

Afterwards, tried to organise a Sun-Observation activity but unfortunately there was a light drizzling and we were unable to continue.

Finally, we had our last Fox-Hunting session. My friends and I volunteered as Hunters and we set out to hunt for the hidden transmitters. Unfortunately, none of the hunters were able to find any of the transmitters and came back empty handed.
No one could find the hidden trasnmitters as they were placed in areas that are surrounded by buildings, hence we could not obtain a clear reading on their locations.I learnt that the signals emitted by the transmitters will be messed up due to the large amount of buildings that are around it causing the signals to bounce around the area.We should hold the activity in an open area so the signals will not bounce everywhere.
6TonyToday morning Mr Tan conduced another lecture on the sun and how it is able to emit electromagnetic waves that reach Earth. The lecture covered on solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Apparently some powerful coronal mass ejections are able to reach Earth, and disable many electronics. It is known as a electromagnetic pulse (EMP). After the lecture, we naturally proceeded to do solar gazing. We set up our Coronado sun scope and pointed it at the sun outside of the conference room we were in.

At noon, our club members unanimously voted to watch a documentary called "How the Universe Works" which covered the topics of "Planets From Hell" and "Birth of the Earth". "Planets From Hell" expounded on vicious and uninhabitable planets in nearby galaxies. There were planets that were extremely hot, and planets that were constantly blanketed by heavy storms. "Birth of the Earth" covered on how Earth was formed from a gas cloud in the middle of nowhere. After the screening, we proceeded into the second Fox-Hunting session. However, this time I was the "game master", which required me to hide the transmitters. My transmitter was never found by any of the groups, which was a testament to how well I hid it.
The cause was because I hid the trasmitter in a very obscure location, which was hard for the other students to find.I learnt about the different solar flares, and the effects on Earth. I also learnt about how our planet was able to form from a gas cloud. In the future I will try to balance out the difficulty whenever I am organising a game.
7You JiaToday morning Mr Tan taught us about the sun and it's layers, and how it had different features such as sunspots and Corona Mass Ejections After that, we used the coronado telescope to view the sun outside the conference room. However, it was not bright long enough to do focusing on the sun. Retreating into the conference room, we watched and episode of " how the universe works" :Planets from hell. Althought the visuals were exciting, the episode kept on repeating both the animations and the content. It was also not in depth and only covered very basic concepts. After lunch, we watched another episode called "Birth of the earth". This episode was better and more in depth, and with less repeated animations. After the documentries, we did fox hunting, where I hid the "fox" in a tree the looked like a colourful painting with warm colours. Tony said it was too obvious. However, no one found it. At night, it was cloudy...The weather did not favour us at all. Also, I had apparently chose a very obscure place to put the transmitter. There should be more interesting activities planned for bad weather. I should also put my fox at a place that was easier to see.I will put my fox at an unobstructed area.
8Jia ChenWe started off the day with an endless beeping sound from the power bank indicating that it needed charging. Then, we watched two documetries called "Planet from hell" and "Birth of the Earth". The documetries showed different planets in the Solar System and about how unsuitable they are for life, the next documentry was about how the Earth was just a cloud of dust but despite all the odds, emerged as a planet which sustains life. After the documentries, we did fox hunting. This time, I was the player. the transmitters were hidden in locations which had walls, obsticles or just restricted locations such as the resturant. Therefore, in total, all the teams found none of the transmitters. The locations where they hid the transmitters were between walls, close to buildings or in restricted areas. An example is 145.200 was hidden in the resturant which we were not alloweed to access although we picked up the signal. 145.300 was hidden close to a building which made the radio waves absorbed when searching from the wrong direction and it also made the transmission cut from 30 seconds to about 10 seconds. I learnt that hiding the fox is easier said than done as there are many obsticles and issues to consider to allow the antenna to work properly. In future, we should ensure that the location of the fox is unobstructed and that there are no nearby buildings or objects that could result in a disruption of the radio waves.
9Kit HintToday, we got had a lesson on the sun of our solar system, we also wactched a documentary about how planets in the galaxy are formed and their hellish conditions and why it is caused, such as planets with one hemisphere at scorching hot temperaures with the other subjeced to sub-zero temperatures. We then wattched another documentary on the origins of the earth, we also got to play fox-hunting where the difficulty was extreme. The transmitters were hidden in areas with many obstrucions or in places where radio waves emitted were easily absorbed or reflected.I learn that a game of fox-hunting can be easily disrupted by surroundings We should hold he activity in an area without radio wave obstructions and where the difficulty of the game is not too hard
10MosesIn the morning, we used the Coronado telescope to look at the sun. However, there was a limited view of the sky was cloudy. It had then started to rain. Thus we brought the telescope back to the room. After the solar observation, we watched a documentry on the Planets from Hell., it mentioned may planet and it hellish temperatures ranging from 3000ºC to -247ºC

In the afternoon, after lunch, we watched another documentary on the birth of the earth and how it came to be. It was very exciting as it showed the different stages of the earth's growth from a speck of dust to a huge planet hundred of kilometres across.

We also did Fox Hunting after the documentary was played. My group did not find any of the foxes as the foxes were well hidden and were also next to many pieces of metal which interfered the signal given out by the fox.
For the Fox Hunting game, we should not place the transmitters in certain places with many pieces of metal which may affect the signal given out by the fox, such as alongside or inside buildings as the walls of the building and metal objects nearby. Some people also suggested that we should not place it in the trees and it may be difficult for the hunters to locate the fox on the branches of a tree. Overall, we decided that playing Fox Hunting in an open space, where there could be nothing blocking the radio waves, would be the best option.I have learnt that planning for a game may make the game easier to play. I also learnt about how the earth formed and how lucky we are that so many things lined up perfectly for life on earth to be possible and there could be a chance of other life somewhere out there in our universe. I should predict what would be the best option for me to take and not making decisions blindly. If I ever see my friend acting before thinking through accurately, I would advise them to make the right choice not to regret whatever decisions they would make in the future.
11AdamToday, we had the Coronado observation by using the telescope to try and observe the sun. However, it was challenging to see the sun through the telescope because there were too many clouds blocking the sun so e could only have a while to adjust and focus the equipment before it was covered again.

After lunch, we watched an episode of Planets from Hell from the DVD that Mr Tan brought and the video displayed a few of the many different planets in our universe that is uninhabitable for life either because of tremendous heat, cold or electromagnetic waves. It was a fascinating video because the animations in the video looked realistic, but was able to convey the significant information to the audience well. After lunch, we continued watching another episode of Birth of the Earth, and it was even more compelling than the first. The only possible problem I would have with this videos is that it is pretty repetitive, especially the transmissions that were meant for advertisements. However, other than that, we had a relaxing time.

Lastly, we had conducted the Fox Hunting game again as planned, but this time, I was in the group finding the transmitters. A total of three groups were assigned with the hunting equipment, but in the end, nobody had obtained any of the transmitters. We tried our best, searching every level, but we could not locate them as the signal seemed to be coming from everywhere. When everybody was back, Mr Tan discussed with us why we were not successful and how we could plant the transmitters better for the game to be more enjoyable in the future.
We might have had a better chance to observe the sun if we had done it on any day earlier instead of assigning only one day to conduct the activity as not everything goes to plan all the time. For the Fox Hunting game, we should not place the transmitters in certain places such as alongside or inside buildings as the walls of the building and metal objects nearby may absorb or reflect the radio waves emitted from the transmitters. Some people also suggested that we should not place it in the trees and it may be difficult for the hunters to locate on the branch of a tree. Overall, we decided that playing Fox Hunting in an open space, where there could be nothing blocking the radio waves, would be the best option, such as the beach. I have learnt that we should always plan before any exercises such as thinking of a strategy before fox hunting or even thinking of the lessons and when would be a feasible time to conduct them. We also learnt about how the earth formed and how lucky we are that so many things lined up perfectly for life on earth to be possible and there could be a chance of other life somewhere out there in our universe. I should think into the future by predicting what would be the best option for me to take and not going around, making decisions blindly, without thinking about the consequences. If I ever see my friend acting before thinking through accurately, I would advise him/her to make the right choice not to regret whatever decisions they would make in the future.
12AdielRight after breakfast, we learnt about how the Sun and other Galatic Backgrounds could be used as radio resources. Particularly, we emphasised on the features of the sun like the Corona Loops and the Flares. We did not manage to begin Solar Observation due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Afterwards, we watched two separate documentaries regarding the universe - Planets from Hell and the Birth of the Earth. Although I have watched "Planets from Hell" before in Secondary 2, it gave me a deeper insight as compared to the previous time as I understood better now.

In the late afternoon, we had a final session of "Fox Hunting", executed by the players who did not get the chance of setting up the transmitters in the previous two sessions. I was tough for the players to locate any of the "transmitters".

The difficulty of the Fox Hunting game was possibly due to the undesirable locations of the transmitters. Some of the transmitters were placed in urban areas, which is against the rules of the game.I have learnt that if the transmitters were placed in open areas and preferably in a large body of water, it would be easier for the Fox Hunter to locate the fox.In the future, I would remember the mistakes that I encountered during the activities done during this event. This is particular to activities in this event (e.g. Fox Hunting) that might be done in the futre. It would reduce the time spent figuring out what the mistake is and it would be a waste if the mistake is repeatedly done.
13Jun HuaOn this present-day, we did similar activities from yesterday such as the viewing of films and fox-hunting. It was more of a relaxed day due to it being the last day at this hotel.

Today, we had another lecture by Mr Tan about the Sun and how it could be measured through its EM waves emitted. He delved into deeper theories such as how solar flares affect us.

The film we watched this time was a documentry instead of a movie (regrettably), through a unanimous vote, it was decided that we were going to watch out about "Planets from hell" & "Birth of the Earth". Both of which shared plenty of knowledge. Even though I already watched it when I was in secondary 2, it is always good to revisit these documentries to recall about what I've learned from the past.

Today's fox-hunting was a little different as I was part of the organisation squad, meaning I was in charge of placing a transmitter. It went quite well, no one found any transmitter means we hid it somewhat well, better than I expected. However, we did not hide it in a reasonable location for people to find which in game sense isn't good.
The reason why most of the playas of the fox-hunting game was unable to find our transmitter is because I placed it in between two buildings which made it harder for them to find due to bouncing of radio waves. I learned that I should consider more about the playas of future games not just fox-hunting when it comes to organising such events. I should make sure it would be challenging but not impossible for the participants as that would result in no one having fun.I should try to make events that I am in charge of organising more enjoyable for everyone and should not be bias.
14AndrienIn the morning, we went solar gazing, then in the afternoon, we watched a documentary - Planets from Hell. Then we had lunch and after lunch, we continued with the documentary - Birth of the Earth. In the late afternoon, we went fox hunting. No one could find our 'fox' because we are not supposed to hide it behind the plates in the restaurant as they could not enter the restaurant with the fox hunting equipment.I have learnt that we should place the fox in an open and unblocked area and not place it near buildings as it blocks the signal.I should check with someone else if I am not sure about doing certain things in future.
15ZacharyToday, we watched a few videos about the universe, mainly about the different planets that cant support life, and how the earth was created. Then, we used the corona telescope to do some solar gazing, and tried to image the sun. After that, we played more fox hunting. I was now the gamemaster, and i was to hide the fox. However, no one could find my fox as i hid it too close to the building, and it absorbed the signal it was producing, thus people could not find it.I learnt that we should not hide the fox so close to buildings as it blocks the signal.Next time when hiding foxes, we should hide them in open areas with little human traffic.
16ErnestToday we watched a documentery of planets with extreme surface conditions and how the earth was formed, while I nearly fell asleep several times, there was much interesting information within.
Later on, I helped hide the 'fox'(radio) and brainstormed ideas with the other helpers on how we could improve theexpereice. Partway through, my remembering of how the device worked(30 seconds on broadcast, 30 seconds of silence) helped me figure out what went wrong with our previous search.
The show was somewhat slow, rehashing details I had familarities with or stating otherwise interesting facts in a calm tone that nearly put me to sleep.
Regarding the foxhunt, one of my team's confusion was how often the broadcast would cut out, preventing us from regaining a signal. I figured out that it was not broadcasting at those moments one day too late.
None of the teams found the radios since we hid them in too out of the spot locations.
To peservere through events no matter how boring since there may be valuable informations within.
Keep in mind briefings on activities and go through them one last time before I carry them out, if possible.
In boring lectures, I can stay awake and force myself to learn.
During briefings, try to keep in mind any important lessons so i don't realise them too late.
17MadhulikaToday we watched two documentries. We also tried observing the sun which wasn't a success. Also, we played fox Hunting. We weren't able to observe the sun as the sky was very cloudy, also during fox hunting we faced alot of problems. Even thugh we went around the whole resort, we were unable to find a single one. According to the concept Mr Tan explained, this was because any metal metal objects beside the fox will absorb the radiowaves and our broadcasting would not be strong. So we learnt that the best place to place is at any open area.Put the foxes in an open area such as the beach near the water, as water is a good mirror-like structure that would allow faster broadcasting.
